Summary of presentation
Post-Grenfell and in the wake of the Building Safety Act 2022, building design is now, more than ever, significantly influenced by fire safety objectives. These objectives often relate to life safety, property protection and business continuity. The significance of fire safety is such that most design decisions would impact the outcome from a fire safety perspective, requiring competent fire engineers to be involved throughout the design, construction and operation of buildings.

Fire safety objectives translate into functional requirements buildings get assessed against when defining compliance with building regulations, insurance policy and client briefs. To meet these requirements, buildings get designed with a multi-layer of components and systems that contribute towards adequate performance.

Identification and understanding of what constitutes a defect in the overall performance of a building is critical to inform scopes of remediation (i.e. probability of component failure is accounted for as part of overall building system design).
