Design Risk – an engineer’s perspective: what goes wrong and why

Nick Barham

Nick began the presentation by summarising the basic principles of risk management in relation to construction projects, and the principles of risk allocation in relation to construction contracts, all from the perspective of a structural engineer.  He then summarised the design process, and described how engineers think about the root causes of failure.  In the main body of the presentation, Nick focussed on design risks, attempting to categorise and summarise the most common issues he has seen, before illustrating these risks with some real-life case studies.
