The AGM and Annual Dinner
The AGM will take place at Middle Temple Hall at 6.30pm on Wednesday, 16 th May. There will be no Council election this year. As usual, members were invited to put their names forward if they wished to stand for election to Council but no names were received. The four members of Council up for re-election (Lindy Patterson, Jocelyn Taylor , Anthony Lavers and Keith Kirkwood ) will therefore be returned unopposed. Two other members of Council will be co-opted; one to replace Jonathan Hosie who retires from Council this year, and one to replace Councillor Peter Horne who, sadly, died last month.
After the AGM, pre-dinner drinks will be served – in the gardens, if fine – followed by dinner itself in the magnificent 16 th century Middle Temple Hall.
The annual dinner is the one function of the year reserved for SCL members only and we hope that as many of you as possible will be able to join us. We particularly urge those new to the Society, or those of you who have never been before, to come along to this very friendly function and meet your fellow members.
The price is £80 per member (this includes pre-dinner drinks and wine) and there is still time to book your place if you have not already done so. A flyer giving details of how to book is attached to this newsletter.
Opportunities for Sponsorship - SCL International Conference 2008
The Society of Construction Law is delighted to be hosting the 2008 International Construction Law Conference in London . The conference will be held between 5th and 7th October 2008 with a welcoming event on the Sunday evening, a gala dinner on the Monday evening and the President's reception on the Tuesday evening so please make a note in your diaries.
This event will attract many high profile speakers and SCL members and delegates from around the world. In order to ensure its success the SCL will be making available a limited number of elite sponsorship packages. If any of you would be interested in discussing sponsorship packages for this prestigious event please contact Francis Whitehead at franceswhitehead@scl.org.uk
Junior Boat Trip on the Thames: Thursday, 12 July 2007
The Junior Committee of the Society of Construction Law in association with MatRICS and King's College Construction Law Association present the third joint Junior organisations' boat trip on the River Thames. A champagne reception will be followed by drinks and a finger buffet as the ‘Golden Jubilee' travels from Temple Pier down river towards Docklands. Tickets cost £25 each. A booking form is attached to this newsletter and is available on the website. If you need any further information please contact Frances Whitehead on 01708 731 476 or email franceswhitehead@scl.org.uk
Booking preference for any of the organised Junior events is always given to those who are registered as Junior Members . If you are under 40 or new to the world of construction law, then you can register as a junior member, which is easy to do, as follows:
Log onto the SCL website www.scl.org.uk using your username and password (if you have forgotten what they are, Admin can help). Click on ‘Members' and then click the 'Junior members' link on the left. You will find an explanation of Junior Membership, and a simple form to register. You do not need to enter your name/details – these are already recognised by the website after you logged in; you only need to confirm your eligibility by giving either your date of birth, or stating that you are junior in your area of expertise.
Papers
Enclosed with this newsletter are copies of the first and second prize winning SCL Hudson entries. “What Lies Beneath” by Julian Bailey and “Variations, Time Limits and Unanticipated Consequences” by Ronan Champion. Overseas e-members will receive these papers by email and they are also available on the SCL website.
Director, Centre of Construction Law, King's College London
The Centre of Construction Law within the Law School at King's College London is seeking a new Director from the start of January 2008. Philip Britton, Director since 1999, is standing down at the end of December 2007. The post is presently part-time (up to four days a week equivalent), allowing other professional activity.
The Director has overall administrative and financial responsibility for the well-established and self-funded Centre, staffed by a small and committed group of colleagues with strong links to practice. The Director also teaches on the London and Singapore MSc programmes. A new MSc in the Gulf is now being planned with the British University in Dubai (BUiD). The Director's post enjoys unusual scope for leadership and innovation.
The process of filling this high-profile post is now under way, with a plan to select the new Director by September 2007. Anyone who would like to explore suitability – for themselves or for a suggested candidate – is welcome to contact Philip on 020-7848 1661 or philip.britton@kcl.ac.uk ; or Professor Phillip Capper on 07802-309010 or phillip.capper@lovells.com Formal advertisements, job descriptions etc will follow shortly, to be posted on the King's website: www.kcl.ac.uk
