The Society’s 21 st Birthday Party and President’s Reception
The Society’s 21 st Birthday Party and President’s Reception will be held at Ironmongers’ Hall, Barbican, London on the evening of Monday 18 th October ( 6.30pm – 9pm ). For those of you who have not attended the President’s Reception before, it is a biennial event to which the Society always invites many senior members of the construction industry and also the senior members of the Judiciary. In recent years our guests at the President’s reception have included the Right Honourable Lord Woolf and Sir John Egan.
The President’s Reception is also an occasion when the President’s medal is awarded to someone who has made a significant contribution to furthering the Society’s aim of promoting the study and understanding of construction law amongst all those involved in the construction industry.
As it is 21 years since the Society was formed we have combined the President’s Reception with our 21 st Birthday Party and have invited all the founder members.
We anticipate strong demand for tickets to the event and have decided that tickets will be limited to SCL members only until 1 st September. Tickets for non members may be booked after 1 st September (subject to availability). The tickets cost £25 each and a flyer and booking form is attached. We will also shortly be taking online bookings in the usual way at ww.scl.org.uk
Scotland
Instead of regions for just Glasgow and Edinburgh, we now have two regional co‑ordinators who will cover the whole of Scotland . A welcome therefore to David Anderson and Lindy Patterson.
Both are keen to receive ideas/suggestions about the sort of events and topics members would like to see covered within Scotland and Scottish members have already been sent an email seeking views. Please feel free to email them at davidanderson@scl.org.uk and lindypatterson@scl.org.uk
New SCL Region
Welcome to another regional co-ordinator. Marian Harris-Deans is now the regional co-ordinator for the newly created Southern region. Professor John Uff QC has kindly agreed to give the inaugural talk on Thursday, 2 October and the venue and topic of Professor Uff’s talk will be announced very shortly.
Marian’s contact details are marianharris-deans@scl.org.uk or telephone 01489 579 990 and members in the region are invited to forward suggestions on any topics they would like to hear given as talks.

Construction Law: Introduction to the Basics
In 2003 the Junior Committee of the SCL collaborated with the Centre of Construction Law at King's College London to run a half-day seminar, Construction Law: Introduction to the Basics. Over 100 lawyers and construction professionals came together at King's Strand Campus to hear an afternoon of presentations about key issues and principles of law in the field and enjoyed a buffet supper together afterwards. Now Introduction to the Basics 2004 is being launched, taking place at King's again on the afternoon of Thursday 9 th September 2004 . Planned speakers include Professor Phillip Capper, Helen Garthwaite, Liam Holder, Philip Britton, Mark Handley and Nicholas Gould.
The event should interest those considering construction as a possible specialisation and for junior or recently appointed staff encountering construction issues in their work for the first time - so SCL members are encouraged to book for themselves but also to pass the information on to colleagues who may be interested. Further details and a booking form are available on the SCL website: there is a discount for SCL members and for more than one delegate from the same organisation booking at the same time. Enquiries to Linda Jones in the Centre of Construction Law at King's: linda.jones@kcl.ac.uk or 020-7848 2685.
Lecture at Leeds Civic Hall
On the afternoon of Friday, 1 st October 2004 , His Honour Judge Anthony Thornton QC will give a lecture entitled “Adjudication and arbitration: A symbiotic relationship”. The event will be held in the Banqueting Suite of Leeds Civic Hall and tickets cost £20 each (to include coffee and biscuits before and after the event). A leaflet and booking form can be found on the SCL website.
TeCSA Course
TeCSA is providing a specialist training course for Mediators on 29 th and 30 th September. The course will be held in Birmingham and the cost is £1175 for TeCSA members and £1468.75 for non-members. For details on how to book, contact David Miles: DMiles@glovers.co.uk

Enclosed with this newsletter is your copy of the 2004/2005 Members Directory - issued only to members of the Society. Please note that the details it contains are those that we had on the database at 30 th June. In addition, it contains the names of only those members who have given us permission to list them in a hard copy directory.
Also enclosed is a copy of the pocket-sized Autumn/Winter Diary of Events. If any member wishes to have more copies of the Diary to distribute to colleagues or clients, please contact Jackie Morris.
SCL Website
If you have not yet done so, take a look at the new website which has been completely redesigned to make it easier to use. Members can now log in from the homepage, and stay logged in throughout the site until they log out. When you log in you will see a new navigation link to 'Members' which is where you can update your contact details, email subscriptions and data protection info - as well as search for information about other SCL members who have agreed for their data to be accessible to other members on the website (currently over 500 members). In due course some new facilities will be added for members.
If you have any questions, problems or suggestions, please contact our webmaster, Edward Peters, at Webmaster
