President's Reception
To mark the Millennium year, Lord Justice Otton, President of the Society of Construction Law, hosted a reception on the evening of Wednesday 25 October 2000 at the Ironmonger's Hall, London EC2. 200 members of the Society attended, as well as a number of official guests including senior representatives of the judiciary and the construction industry.
The Society has now instituted a President's medal, which is an honorary medal to be presented for an outstanding contribution to construction law. The first such medal was presented at the President's Reception by Lord Justice Otton to Professor John Uff QC; when awarding the silver medal to him, Lord Justice Otton spoke of the tremendous success of the MSC course in construction law and management at King's College, which Professor Uff, a distinguished barrister, had inaugurated in 1987 and which was one of the first courses of its kind. This was one of many notable achievements on Professor Uff's part, helping to promote and develop understanding of construction law not just amongst lawyers but also a significant number of construction professionals.
Professor Uff, who with Lord Cullen, is currently chairing the public enquiries into the Southall and Paddington rail disasters, expressed his deep gratitude at being the first recipient of the SCL President's medal and said how very much he appreciated this gesture.
European Society for Construction Law
The annual meeting of the European Society of Construction Law was held in Milan on Sunday, 15th October. The Chairmen of each of the national Societies of Construction Law attended to represent their members, together with several past chairmen.
The European Society (under the direction of His Honour Judge Humphrey Lloyd) has produced a bibliography of construction law materials throughout Europe, listing primary sources, standard contracts and principal text books. This will shortly be available to members on request.
It was decided that a database of organisations interested in construction professions and industries in European states participating in the European Society would be prepared over the course of the next year. It is also intended that the European Society will produce and maintain a yearbook listing major developments in construction law in member countries.
Congratulations to Victoria Russell! The UK Society's Chairman, Victoria Russell, was unanimously elected Vice-President of the European Society. She will take over from the current President, Alfons Huber of the Austrian Society, in October 2001.
