2010/2011 SCL Construction Law Prize  (Salford University)
John Anthony McCormack (Joint Winner)
In July 2011 John McCormack was awarded the LLM with Distinction in Construction Law and Practice. For his dissertation on the Masters course John decided to investigate the ever present problem of orally instructed additional works and payment thereof. His dissertation analysed previous case law and relevant publications seeking to establish a set of guidelines that contractors could use to assist in securing payment for their works. His extensive research produced some very interesting results and John was subsequently awarded the joint highest mark on the LLM Course.

Andrew Milner (Joint Winner)
Andrew Milner was awarded an LLM with Distinction in Construction Law and Practice in October 2010. For his dissertation Andrew analysed the arguments for and against the inadmissibility of pre-contractual negotiations in the process of interpretation of written contracts. Adopting a black-letter law approach Andrew examined court judgments, key journal articles and textbooks. Andrew’s dissertation is concerned with English law but he also draws upon the law in other jurisdictions notably New Zealand and Australia. Andrew’s exhaustive research produced a wealth of interesting findings and he was awarded the joint highest mark in his class for the Dissertation.

Emma Houghton
Emma Houghton was awarded the MSc with Distinction in Quantity Surveying in February 2011. For her masters dissertation Emma Jane analysed the use of Z clauses in NEC forms of contract exploring the motivation underlying the use of these clauses, the types of clauses inserted in contracts and the effect of these amendments on the NEC objectives. Her exhaustive research produced a wealth of interesting findings and she was awarded the highest mark in her class for the Dissertation.
